2008 had lots in store for the economic tailspin and wondered whether 2009 would bring a breathing space, but with soaring inflation combined with another announcement of lowering interest rates only goes to show we are still far from the end.The pound has lost its exchange value against the euro. Housing has fell to its lower since 1991. Practically all the companies with over a legacy of more than 1oo years in business are going into adminsitration. The UK’s unemployment figures for the 1st quarter will be sky touching. Retails sales have not been impressive compared to the previous years, market is announcing more redundancy. Recession has left no one untouched. It would be very soon the Bank of England will have to join the Fed and the Bank of Japan in widening its pocket to fight the financial crisis.
2009 for UK
One Country – Diverse Rule
Shakira performed in the Capital of UAE – ‘Abu Dhabi’ on the new year’s eve. Abu Dhabi, culturally is far more conventional than Dubai. But it was very surprising to see the paradox between the 2 states where Abu Dhabi hoisted the show in one of its opulent location i.e. The Emirates Palace hotel and on the other hand the ruler of Dubai canceled all the new year’s celebration in recognition to the violence in Gaza city.
This raised many eyebrows for a fact that this battle has been ongoing for decades altogether, by no means here we are trying to say we are not compassionate about the human situation. But there is lot going on within Dubai’s backyard itself. The mortifying conditions of the construction labourers who are shaping their sand rugged country. Way back in the year 2002 the Dubai dry dock incident which claimed nearly 37 lives was kept a hushed issue. The state controlled media was tight lipped.
Dubai, by no means has kept itself away from the ravage of the recession and its revenue mill being the service industry also has experienced the cold season. Oil is not the industry that runs the economyof Dubai, but it is the Trading and the Service Industry. But this did not defeat the spirits of the Dubains, everybody out to enjoy found their way to the starry desert -welcome 2009!!!!!
Fashion to Fragile
Credit crunch has hit the entire globe but certainly not the fashion industry. The glamorous figures that we see on the ramp are just unattainable for many women, who only become seriously ill in just trying to attain them.
Anorexia is often linked with catwalk models, pop singers and movie stars, anorexia is, a far from glamorous condition. It kills more young women than any other psychological illness, ending their lives in a particularly cruel way. The term anorexia nervosa has its roots in ancient Greek, essentially translating to “nervous loss of appetite”. The disorder is characterised by extreme weight loss (at least 15 per cent below normal body weight), and a seemingly irrational refusal to maintain normal body weight. Other more recently identified diagnostic criteria include fat phobia – an extreme fear of weight-gain – and body-image disturbance, in which extremely thin individuals misperceive themselves as being of average weight or even slightly overweight.
There is no known biological cause for this illness. Anorexia is psychiatrically categorised as an eating disorder, and has the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder. For decades anorexia was viewed as a culture-bound syndrome – an illness almost exclusively confined to western industrialised nations, by virtue of the “thin body” beauty ideal common within these cultures.
Since the mid-1990s, the rising rates of eating disorders in many non-western nations has been well documented. With increasing research all of the evidence points to a rising incidence of anorexia in many non-western nations. Studies in Japan suggest the incidence of anorexia nervosa has been increasing since the end of the Second World War and, despite the relatively low levels of obesity in the country.
More recently increasing incidence of anorexia has been reported by studies undertaken in both India and China.
One interesting finding from the Indian and Chinese studies is that some of the psychological symptoms of anorexia are missing from many of these patients. Although they exhibit extreme weight loss in the absence of a physical illness, many do not report body-image dissatisfaction or a desire for thinness. Instead, they explain their weight loss in terms of physical symptoms such as complaining that eating leads to them feeling bloated and uncomfortable.
But the Gulf nations have reported high levels of anorexic symptoms. According to the surveys, the secondary school-age women report having anorexic symptoms associated with body image disturbance, a drive for thinness and a fear of weight gain. Anorexia or eating disorders have become common since the 1990s: rapid economic change, consumer culture, changing and potentially conflicted female gender roles, and diet and lifestyle changes associated with obesity.
One can still be fashionable by eating well!!
Britain’s going bust
Obviously, the finance ministers are sure of what they are doing. Another cut in the interest rates. Boy oh boy it is absolutely bitting. This is going to have an impact. Unexpected cut in the interest rates is not going to undo the damage that has already been caused by the worst economic crisis of the century.
The economy is already in a biggest trouble by lowering down rates and a further cut would only scrap the barrels flat. The biggest question is how the banks’ are using the bailout packages from the tax-payers MONEY??
Instead of making the right efforts to move the economy by using the money from tax-payers, all the banks’ seem to hang on the bonuses that they expect.
Its the beauty parade of all Central banks coming out and reducing interest rate cuts in an effort to save the economy.
The bright side remains only how much of the help gets passed on.
Barclays ME Venture
Interesting, at such dire times in the financial world, Barclays has managed to scoop a small smile. Opting out of the Govt’s bailout plan, it has ME (Abu Dhabi and Qatar) on the investor list
